10 Reasons to Attend the Semel HCI 2019 Celebration: Health in Harmony
1. Musical performances
Come find your groove at this year’s celebration, “Health and Harmony”! We’ll march to the beat of a Bruin drum with performances by some of UCLA’s most rhythmically gifted, including: The Bash Dogs, Dalida Arakelian, the Women in Jazz Ensemble, the Herbie Hancock Institute of Jazz Performance Ensemble, and Resonance A Cappella.
2. Quincy Jones
It’s not everyday that legendary music icon Quincy Jones comes and hangs out at UCLA’s Sunset Canyon Recreation Center. This year, he will be receiving the Semel HCI Eudaimonia Award –awarded each year to an individual who exemplifies a life full of purpose and meaning.
3. Delicious Food by EveryTable
Healthy food is a human right! That’s why we’re partnering with Everytable to bring you scrumptious, healthy, made-from scratch food inspired by the cultures and flavors of LA. Read more here about Everytable’s mission to increase access to healthy food.
4. Celebrate UCLA’s birthday
It’s the birthday party of the century, literally! Ring in UCLA’s 100th Birthday with us as we celebrate creating the healthiest campus in the country!
5. Free goodies!
No celebration is complete without a party favor! We want you to take a piece of the celebration home with you. The first 1,000 who complete our passport activity will get a special mystery prize. Everyone else who attends will receive a laptop decal, delicious samples from our very own Flexbar in DeNeve, and snacks and beverages courtesy of our sponsors Dasani, Patagonia Provisions, and Zico Coconut Water.
6. Student Research Projects
Every year, Semel HCI sponsors students with innovative ideas. Come support the amazing research out students are doing including cooking lessons by the Public Health Nutrition Club, Environmental Leaders Training by E3, a mental health conference by Active Minds and more!
7. Tabling by the Campus Community
Health and well-being is a collective effort. Come meet some of our key campus and community partners and learn more about how they are building a culture of health at UCLA. Partners include the Arthur Ashe Student Health & Wellness Center, UCLA Community Programs Office, Food Forward, UCLA Residential Life, Staff Assembly and more!
8. Learn about the connection between music and health
The hills are alive with the sound of music… Have you noticed the recent increase in music all over campus? Music has been proven to have positive effects on health and well-being. Efforts such as the UCLA Piano Project and Mindful Music help students, staff, and faculty at UCLA de-stress and build community through music. For even more music and insights into music and health, come check out our celebration.
9. Martial Arts Presentation + Games
The recent onslaught of Marvel and DC superhero films have inspired us to get into shape and learn how to protect ourselves and get in touch with our bodies. Join us for a free martial arts presentation to help you hero-up! Other games include jenga, corn hole, paddle ball, beach volleyball, and checkers.
10. Enjoy the Semel HCI Garden
No green thumbs needed in order to enjoy the tranquility of the jane b semel HCI Community Garden. Students, staff, and faculty at UCLA are growing healthy food and learning key urban gardening practices. Veggies grown in the garden also go to the CPO Food closet to support campus food insecurity!
